With Ian Paice returning to Deep Purple for a world tour, Original Purpendicular drummer Rainer Lidauer returned to the fold to the delight of his colleagues in Wels Austria. The venue was the excellent Sound Theatre right in the heart of the city, and featured a remarkable audience. Fans travelled from France and Italy to attend this opening show of 2009.
In the meantime Lidauer has completed his Drum & Percussion exams in Vienna, grading a remarkable 1 A in all catagories!
The Audience gave him a great welcome and the band gave Rainer the chance to open the show with a thunderous version of Fireball.
Vocalist Robby Thomas Walsh said, ‘ You must have a drummer that has dynamics, swing, feeling and power and a motive to improvise when you play Deep Purple material, otherwise it will sound like crap and make the songs weak, I had this before. We missed Rainer, and now hes back and we are very greatful to have Rainer and of course Ian Paice of Deep Purple (guest only) as our drummer’.
Rainer used the exact same set up as Ian Paice in Wels, with the small 10″ tom tom standing out front. The set included many rareities like, Almost Human, Loosen my strings, Mad Dog, Bad Attitude, Cascades and Ted the Mechanic.
The band finished the night with Highway Star as encore.
Another note is that Keyboarder Christoph ‘Stoffi’ Kögler used his original Hammond organ.
The band played so hard that the Police were called, so it reduced the band to only one encore. Can we have everything louder than everything else!
Pictures will be online in the next days.
